Copula sentences and entailment relations

چکیده

In her proposal Claudia Maienborn attempts to provide evidence above all for the following basic claims: First, stative verbal expressions, regardless of whether they represent stage-level or individual-level predicates, pattern with eventive expressions in introducing a hidden referential argument which can be located in time and may serve as an antecedent for anaphoric reference. What separates statives from eventives is that their arguments are not dynamic but static entities, that is, states. Secondly, statives do not form a homogeneous class of expressions. While verbs like stand, sit, and sleep pass all of the relevant eventuality diagnostics, pattering also in this respect with eventives, copula constructions as well as verbs like know, hate, and resemble fail most of these tests. As a result, the expressions refer to states of two radically di¤erent ontological kinds – Davidsonian states (or D-states) and Kimian states (or Kstates), respectively. Thirdly, the K-state argument of copula constructions has its source not in the predicate combined with the copula but in the copula itself. Accordingly, the copula di¤ers from other K-state verbs in having no specific content but only providing an argument position that can be filled by nominal, adjectival or prepositional predicates. I am in agreement with Maienborn about the first claim. Actually, in Dölling (1999, 2003), it is explicitly argued against an approach, which strictly separates copula sentences from other ones in supposing that the former do not refer to states as reified entities but at best to abstract time

ICT: A Translation based Method for Cross-lingual Textual Entailment

In this paper, we present our system description in task of Cross-lingual Textual Entailment. The goal of this task is to detect entailment relations between two sentences written in different languages. To accomplish this goal, we first translate sentences written in foreign languages into English. Then, we use EDITS, an open source package, to recognize entailment relations. Since EDITS only ...

TU Group at NTCIR9-RITE: Leveraging Diverse Lexical Resources for Recognizing Textual Entailment

This paper describes the TU system that participated in the Entrance Exam Subtask of NTCIR-9 RITE. The system consists of two phases: alignment and entailment relation recognition. In the alignment phase, the system aligns words in the two sentences by exploiting diverse lexical resources such as entailment information, hypernym-hyponym relations and synonyms. Based on the alignments and relati...

Discovering Entailment Relations Using "Textual Entailment Patterns"

In this work we investigate methods to enable the detection of a specific type of textual entailment (strict entailment), starting from the preliminary assumption that these relations are often clearly expressed in texts. Our method is a statistical approach based on what we call textual entailment patterns, prototypical sentences hiding entailment relations among two activities. We experimente...

Unsupervised Entailment Detection between Dependency Graph Fragments

Entailment detection systems are generally designed to work either on single words, relations or full sentences. We propose a new task – detecting entailment between dependency graph fragments of any type – which relaxes these restrictions and leads to much wider entailment discovery. An unsupervised framework is described that uses intrinsic similarity, multi-level extrinsic similarity and the...

Towards Topic Labeling with Phrase Entailment and Aggregation

We propose a novel framework for topic labeling that assigns the most representative phrases for a given set of sentences covering the same topic. We build an entailment graph over phrases that are extracted from the sentences, and use the entailment relations to identify and select the most relevant phrases. We then aggregate those selected phrases by means of phrase generalization and merging...
